Anyone else who experiences phases of horrible lag on the site (especially images loading) since yesterday?

I have not had that issue lately..
But perhaps I'm just " lucky " ? We'll have to wait for other opinions on this !
There's no topic on the french forum mentioning this problem or a similar one though, that's something I can say !

It seems to only happen for a few moments now and then ... maybe it's just not common to encounter it because the phases aren't so long and nobody really cares? I just want to make sure it's not a problem on my side. Everything else loads fine for me, though.

I'm getting horrible pages lag right now just trying to open any of my trades. Conducting a tracert to see if it's the browser/comp that needs a kick and I'm seeing a large number of requests timing out in what I'm guessing is the atlantic hops between the US and France and close to 300ms in the rest of the steps which from memory seems to be same as the last time I checked (local hops are a bit quicker then normal ironically which could either be time or day, or new provider related!)

Yep, just now.
I REALLY wanted that Stoufix in the auction of 21:00 and placed my bid IN TIME, nothing happened, and it went UNSOLD.
Today is my Mother's birthday, she would've been 83 today hadn't she died in 1966.
That Stoufix would have had her birthday and would have gotten her name.

The lag is pretty annoying right now. Is that because of increased strain due to the current event?

Same for me, so much lags compared to when I was playing 2 or 3 years ago and even more since a few days.
I'm forced to wait so long just to move my creatures from one clan to an other and to execute other simple tasks.
Is optimization planned ?

I'm exepriencing the same thing. I had little lags lately (most of the time, it was because of the images not loading).
Now, with the event, it's gotten really bad ! (I have a pretty fast internet connection so it can't come from me). I must wait 30s - 1min for a page to load (sometimes it's faster).

Yes, I'm playing on another game at the same time, so I know it's not because of my internet connection. I can't even enjoy the event, because the page is loading so slowly!
